Product Description

Very finely carved Monongya or Lizard Kachina by Hopi carver Ron Honyumptewa.

Ron Honyumptewa was born April 23rd, 1970 at Tuba City. His parents are Joseph Honyumptewa and Charlene Holmes. Ron is a member of the Sun Clan as is his mother and his father is a member of the Bamboo Clan. Ron was raised at Moenkopi.

He comes from a family of very fine Kachina carvers. His mother’s brother was Tom Holmes who is now deceased. His uncles Loren Phillips and Stetson Honyumptewa are some of the finest and well known carvers as are his cousins Leonard Selestewa and Jonathan Cordero.

Ron learned to carve by watching Tom, Leonard and John carved in about 1986. Then Tom gave him his first piece of wood in 1989 and a knife to carve with. Ron started out making sculptures and then moved on to female Kachinas and then moved on to males. His favorite Kachina to carve is the turkey because of the challenge of carving the feathers. Ron has won awards at Gallup Inter-Tribal, the Heard Museum and at the Prescott Indian Art Show. He also was a 1st place at the State Fair and the Mayer’s award.
