Barton Wright’s book -“Kachinas: A Hopi Artist’s Documentary”- states that “the name of this Kachina is derived from the mask which resembles the rattle given to the children on the occasion of the Powamu or Niman ceremonies. The sun motif appears on both sides of the mask. These kachinas come in pairs but race one at a time. In each hand the racer carries a yucca whip with which the runner is given a lusty swat if he does not win the race. The kachina gives a piki bread as a reward.”
