Product Description
Very finely carved Deer Dancer (Sowi-ingwu) Kachina out of a single piece of cottonwood root by Hopi Artist, Jonathan Gaseoma. This one-piece carving depicts a dancer in motion with antlers and feathers around the headdress. It is quite a wonderful work of art.
Hopi artist, Jonathan Gaseoma was born in 1980 in Tuba City and raised in Moenkopi by his parents Logan Gaseoma and Connie Canyon. He is a member of the Ghost Clan. He has four lovely daughters. Jonathan began carving Kachinas when he was 13 years old. He was taught much about carving by Hopi carvers, Aaron Takala and Landoll Roy but also gleaned much for seeing work others were doing. He grew up learning Hopi culture from his grandfather and grandmother, Russell Sr. and Virginia Gaseoma.
Jonathan creates difficult one-piece Kachinas and his carving is very finely detailed. He enjoys carving many different Kachinas, “whatever he feels.”
