Five-strand coral fetish necklace by Zuni Pueblo artist Lavina Tsikewa. A masterpiece by a master carver and artist! This necklace consists of 172 birds and 17 animals for a total of 189 fetishes, and is strung with handmade natural Santo Domingo coral heishi. From the private collection of Don and Nita Hoel, these are the finest Lavina Tsikewa fetishes we have ever seen. The smallest carvings measures only 3/8″ long with the largest fetishes measuring about 7/8″ long. Photographed for the book, Fetishes and Carvings of the Southwest by Oscar Branson, it can be seen on page 59. Very few artists are making fetish necklaces these days. Lavina is the daughter of David Tsikewa and Mary Tsikewa (who was the daughter of Teddy Weahkee). When you look at her family’s fetishes, you will notice how finely carved and finished they are. The materials they used were always of excellent quality.
